to the way the changing landscape of energy in america, with this low price natural gas we see a transformation from coal to natural gas. .. >> they have an overcapacity of electricity this europe, and as a result, they have a very low wholesale prices, which is good. but their residential rates and their manufacturing rates are the highest in the world because of renewable surcharges. and so what's happening over there is they're trying to make this transition too quickly, in my view, and that's what people are trying to do in america as well. but what's happening over there is that the utilities, the base load utilities have lost like $800 million in market valuation over the last 15 months or so. and so as you go to renewables and you try to, you have to place more emphasis on distribution at the local levels, there's not enough capital this in the utility industry -- in the utility industry there to meet those needs. and so they have a real conflict in europe right now. and interestingly enough, they've mothballed 30 gigawatts of plants producing electricity from natural ga

to testify. as i acknowledged there is a significant change occurring on the energy landscape. the operation in america has experienced only a modest incremental change over the last decades yet in recent years the development of new technology is bringing much more rapid change to the system that can't be disruptive. i think embracing these changes will allow a much more efficient utilization of energy resources. the challenge before us is to enable the system to be more efficient through the utilization of technology and foster the development of a diverse set of competitive energy resources while at the same time and sure we have the power and reasonable rates for consumers. as a result of the technology we are experiencing a supply of natural gas and resulting gas prices at the lowest since 2002. this is changing the economics of electric generation resulting the retirement of older and less efficient units and most recently some nuclear plants. the generation being built is primarily combined gas plants, wind and solar generation. this appears likely to continue. driven by a significant

the atomic energy authorities, and the u.s. alerted others that it may try to make its way into the united states. part of the warning was if anybody came in contact with it. but of course, another part of the worry is that maybe somebody did it on purpose. maybe somebody might realize what they have. or they stole it knowing what they were looking for because they wanted to get their hands on something highly radioactive. american officials told msnbc news that the thieves were not specifically looking for materials with which they could build a dirty bomb. now the authorities said the materials in the case may not just make an effective bomb because it would just blow up in the explosion, instead of dispersing anywhere. they his told msnbc that anybody handling this would probably make themselves very sick or hurt in the process of doing so and maybe they wouldn't be fit in making a bomb. the mexican officials said they believed the thieves were just after the cargo truck itself and the neat mounted crane on the back of the truck in the cab. thieves find these irresistible, and they get

. under the reforms mexico would create a sovereign fund to manage the money generated 50 energy sector after taxes have been collected. as adam reiney reports, the energy bill is not going well with the public. >> protestors have come out in mexico city, just a day after the oil reform package was introduced in the senate. this oil reform is to make more modified the pemex, the state-run oil system. a sacred national resource. pemex was created in 1938, when the president nationalized the product. people marching on sunday say what they're most afraid of is give aways to private companies, to foreign companies, to u.s. based companies. in fact this oil reform package does create a system or would create a system of licenses to allow private companies to not only profit but also run some of the oil and gas fields in mexico. protestors focus their energy on the senate where the reform package was being debated. it's been surrounded by barricades and there is a heavy police presence. there's a clearly tense debate going on in mexico. it looks likely to pass later in the week but we'll see
